Percussion class does include a variety of drums, however it is NOT "drum class". Drum set is not a standard part of our curriculum. Percussionists perform on a variety of instruments, including keyboard and auxiliary. The percussion section is the most select, hand-picked section of the band - the reason being that they have more responsibilities than any other section due to setting up and cleaning up for each rehearsal, and more individual responsibility than any other section. Percussion students should have high levels of coordination and fine motor skills. Percussionists will need to rent a 6th grade percussion student bell kit & drum pad from the local music store for one year. In 7th and 8th grade they will need to keep their drum pad only, and will use LMMS instruments for everything else. We usually start between 8-10 students in each percussion class.

Physical Characteristics: Students should exhibit a great deal of coordination in fine motor skills.

Other Considerations: The study of percussion includes bells, xylophone, triangle, tambourine, maracas, claves, among many other instruments. Students begin 6th grade on a practice-pad to learn basic rudiments & fundamentals of classical drumming, and mallet instruction using a small metal "bell kit" from the rental store. The third major instrument learned in percussion is timpani. Percussion students should be prepared to arrive early to set up, as well as make sure the percussion section is cleaned up after every rehearsal.
