The flute is the smallest of the beginner instruments, but requires strength to play in holding the instrument up and in blowing air. The 6th grade flute section usually consists of 8-10 students per class.

Physical Characteristics: Flute players should have a slight “frown” to the upper lip with NO tear drop shape in the middle. Flute tones are produced by being able to focus an extremely small airstream to an exact location on the tone hole, like blowing air out through an opening the shape of a straw. The tear-drop-shaped lip will make it difficult to direct the air so precisely, so this instrument may be more of a challenge for those with one. Flute players should also have agile fingers for moving this multi-keyed instrument through fast musical passages. The technical demand on flute (fingers moving fast) is very high. Flute players need to exhibit confidence, a strong work ethic and bravery as they are usually seated in the front rows and usually play the melody (most recognizable and important parts).
